It’s mid-February and we find ourselves at that time of year when the pink and red decorations suddenly come out, restaurants are crowded with tables for two, and chocolate dipped strawberries can be found on dessert lists everywhere.
Whether you are a fan of Valentine’s Day or not, this time of year feels significant if for no other reason than we are midway through the winter season and looking for comfort as we wait patiently for spring to arrive.
Valentine’s Day can be a great opportunity to celebrate the love in our lives, not only romantic love, but friendship, family and community. Even if you find the holiday too commercial – or too bound to that predictable color palette – there are ways to mark this moment that will bring you comfort and optimism as you battle cold weather, dry skin and limited fresh produce (at least for those of us in the tougher climates!) It’s an opportunity to practice self care, care for others, and to lavish some love on your home as well.
When I think of Valentine’s Day, I picture inspiring accessories and decor: candles, flowers, ceramics, scents, stemware, bath and beauty products. What I am envisioning is a warm place with an embracing atmosphere where I can take time to slow down and feel gratitude, whether that is with someone else, with a group of people, or blissfully alone for some much needed decompression.
This is a great time to treat yourself to a new home accessory, like a velvet accent pillow for your living room or bedroom, a blown glass vase to elevate your entryway, or a wool rug to warm up your kitchen. If you do plan on cooking or entertaining, you can heighten the experience by decorating with dried flowers, a seasonal garland, or an array of candles. You might want to serve food family style on a glazed stoneware platter or source vintage amber tumblers for an unconventional Valentine’s Day toast.
However you choose to mark this holiday — or not — remember that this is a great time of year for self care and some stolen moments for relaxation and gratitude. Spring will soon be here, and there is a lot to love about that!
