Habits inform our daily rhythms, which has the effect of shaping our environment. The opposite is also true: we can transform our environment to shape our habits. This powerful phenomenon is a crucial factor in my interior design work. The goal is to design for the habits you have, and for the change you want to see.
The last two years have caused many of us to become more aware of some of our habits, as we found our lives centered around the home. Some of these new daily flows have been welcome, and others not so much. But they can all be absorbed and designed for, if you accept that these habits are happening for a reason. If we don’t like a habit, we can gently redirect the energy we’re putting into it toward a more fulfilling end. And one of the best ways to enact this change is by addressing it in your environment.
Changes brought on by the pandemic
You have probably already made accommodations to the current reality. Maybe when all the health clubs closed, you put a basket with workout equipment (ankle weights, resistance bands, muscle rollers) in your living room, to make evening exercise easier. Perhaps you designed an attractive backdrop for all your video conferencing from the home office.
If these little changes can make a difference, what could an overhaul do for you? Your environment plays a crucial role in these efforts at self improvement. Designing for who you are and for what you want moving forward can make meaningful change not only possible, but something you look forward to in your day.
Assess your lifestyle and your needs
Take some time to think about the habits that are helping you, and what you can do to nurture these. And take some time to identify the habits you feel are slowing you down or causing you frustration. What do you wish you had in your home environment that could help you overcome this block? Whether it’s adding a crafting area, designing a meditation room, or overhauling your kitchen to nurture your culinary aspirations, these environmental changes can be life-changing.
It is truly satisfying to go through the process of identifying issues and finding solutions. It’s even better when it results in a more beautiful and functional home. So dream big!
