Think of interior design as a luxury experience that you lavish on yourself, not unlike a day at the spa. However, when you go to the spa, you do nothing but relax and treat yourself with kindness. When your treatments are complete, you pay the bill, and it’s clear what you’re paying for. After all, it just happened in the last few hours. Even if the price tag is high, you’re basking in the afterglow of it all, so you feel justified in the expense.
The long game
With Interior Design, you won’t have that instant gratification. If only you could make the decision to renovate, and then jump in a time machine to the future when it’s all complete! But, sadly, our species hasn’t yet learned to sidestep the space time continuum. Therefore this particular luxury doesn’t happen overnight.
Interior Design is more of a long game, where you dream and plan and pay the bills up front. It won’t be just one lump sum, but various payments over the course of the project.
And you are likely to experience some stress in the intervening weeks and months as the project progresses gradually. It won’t be until later that you get your luxury experience, and this reversal in chronology makes it admittedly harder.
The long game is more challenging initially
How does one take comfort in the idea of luxury when their home has been transformed into a construction site? When problems arise – like delays, or backordered furniture, or confusion over the electrical plan – how easy is it to remind ourselves that it will all be worth it? (These trying times may be an excellent reason to take a spa day!) But that is the nature of the long game, of delayed gratification, and of patient devotion to a goal.
Because once it’s all done, you will have seemingly infinite self care days in your new space. This is change that will last. Having a home that serves your needs and envelops you in its stylish embrace goes beyond the ephemeral experience of isolated luxury moments. This is one luxury that doesn’t need to be paid for over and over again, and where you don’t even have to leave your house. Once you’ve achieved your design goals, every day will be a luxury experience.
