Once you’ve evaluated where you are currently with your space, let’s dream a bit. Pretend there are no constraints. This is the beginning of your design journey. Try to think of at least one thing right now that you would like to change.
Now ask yourself, What is preventing you from making this change? Not knowing what to do? Time? Cost? The immutable laws of physics? Name your biggest roadblocks. These hurdles can’t all be solved overnight (notice I upgraded “roadblocks” to “hurdles”)… but some of them probably can be. We create all kinds of reasons why we can’t do something we want to now, and occasionally it’s just a question of giving ourselves permission. We sometimes have to brush aside paper tigers.
Some challenges are bigger than others
On the other hand, some of your hurdles are real, and will have to be planned for along the way. But I must say emphatically that knowing there will be challenges ahead should not prevent you from dreaming now. It is, after all, the first step toward realizing your goals. So take some time to identify the areas of your home that you want to change. Start with this first “magic wand” moment and see where it takes you.
Take that leap
Successful design allows you to live in the space of your dreams at the present moment, not some undefined time in the future. Identifying what you want to change is the first step. The question of why you haven’t changed it yet is not as fun to think about, but crucial to manifesting the activation energy needed to make these improvements. So identify what your hurdles are, so you can begin to plan for those too.
Any time you decide to take the plunge is the right time. Making your happiness a priority will open up your world in ways you can’t always foresee.
